Operational remote-controlled helicopter transport trolley at SUS
Helipad 2.0 is now commissioned and operational at Stavanger University Hospital (SUS). After development in a simulation environment, testing, and commissioning, the control system handles the trolley's movements in daily use – as planned.
The video shows the system in operational use, with the trolley controlled directly from the remote control onboard the air ambulance helicopter. This provides an efficient and user-friendly solution where the operator has full control over the helicopter transport trolley throughout the operation, without leaving the cockpit.
To ensure precise and reliable positioning, Eon AS uses encoder-based position measurement. The control system continuously monitors the trolley's position along the track, while proximity sensors at the end positions serve as additional verification and a safety barrier.
Travel speed is controlled by the control system, which regulates the variable frequency drive and motor for controlled and predictable movement. With VFD control, system characteristics can be adapted through software – providing stable operation and flexibility for further development.
Safety has been central to the development. The system includes an interlock against an open gate, so the trolley cannot be operated unless the gate is in the correct position. In addition, emergency stop functions are established along both travel directions, stopping the plant immediately if a person or object enters the danger zone.
Although the system is now fully operational, some minor improvements remain. Among other things, a dedicated cable reel will be installed for automatic handling of slack cable to the trolley. This will contribute to further robustness and simplified operation, but does not affect the system's current operation.
